Summary

A warm, incisive new novel about the enduring bonds of marriage and friendship from Cynthia D’Aprix Sweeney, author of the instant New York Times bestseller The Nest

Flora Mancini has been happily married for more than twenty years。 But everything she thought she knew about herself, her marriage, and her relationship with her best friend, Margot, is upended when she stumbles upon an envelope containing her husband’s wedding ring—the one he claimed he lost one summer when their daughter, Ruby, was five。

Flora and Julian struggled for years, scraping together just enough acting work to raise Ruby in Manhattan and keep Julian’s small theater company—Good Company—afloat。 A move to Los Angeles brought their first real career successes, a chance to breathe easier, and a reunion with Margot, now a bona fide television star。 But has their new life been built on lies? What happened that summer all those years ago? And what happens now

With Cynthia D’Aprix Sweeney’s signature tenderness, humor, and insight, Good Company tells a bighearted story of the lifelong relationships that both wound and heal us。

Good Company was a portrait of a marriage。 Nothing much happens most of the time。 You just go on with your life waiting。 When things do happen, you are waiting for them to be over。 That's how I read this book。 I was waiting for something to happen most of the time and then waiting to see how it would end。 At times it was touching and thought provoking, but overall, I feel like I've read this story before。 Good Company was a portrait of a marriage。 Nothing much happens most of the time。 You just go on with your life waiting。 When things do happen, you are waiting for them to be over。 That's how I read this book。 I was waiting for something to happen most of the time and then waiting to see how it would end。 At times it was touching and thought provoking, but overall, I feel like I've read this story before。 。。。more

I really enjoyed the story of Good Company。 This character driven novel focuses on the marriage of Flora and Julian and their best friends Margot and Dave。 all set during a summer with flashbacks to the past。 Margot, Flora, and Julian all have careers in the acting field so a lot of the book centered on the impact that these jobs had on their relationships with each other。 The story starts out when Flora finds Julian's "missing" wedding ring hidden in the bottom of a file cabinet when the story I really enjoyed the story of Good Company。 This character driven novel focuses on the marriage of Flora and Julian and their best friends Margot and Dave。 all set during a summer with flashbacks to the past。 Margot, Flora, and Julian all have careers in the acting field so a lot of the book centered on the impact that these jobs had on their relationships with each other。 The story starts out when Flora finds Julian's "missing" wedding ring hidden in the bottom of a file cabinet when the story behind the missing ring was that it had been lost while swimming in a pond。 How did this ring get here? What is Julian hiding? The strong marriage and friendships are all put in question while Flora figures out who she can trust。 I really enjoyed this book, I did not love it as much as The Nest by Cynthia D'Aprix Sweeney but would definitely recommend with the trigger warnings of adultery。 I did feel lost a few times with the flashbacks to the past that were embedded in the present-day story。 I wish there was a bit more structure of dates or chapter breaks to define these moments。 If you loved the novel Musical Chairs by Amy Poeppel then you will enjoy Good Company! 。。。more

It’s my favorite kind of writing—lyrical, contemplative, and fresh。 The perspective shifts between different characters, and their various voices combine to provide a layered version of events while giving access to their secrets。Fans of literary fiction, particularly by Ann Pachett and Celeste Ng will enjoy this book 。。。more

Spring is officially here! As we welcome much-anticipated warmer weather, I am excited to recommend the perfect book to take to the park and read outside。 “Good Company” by Cynthia D'Aprix Sweeney is filled with charm, humor and grace。 I was captivated by the way the author writes intimately about human connection including the ties between mothers and daughters, husbands and wives and friends。The story begins when 20 years into her happy marriage, Flora Mancini discovers an envelope containing Spring is officially here! Good Company is a book about two couples and their friendships, marriages and careers over several decades。 Set around the entertainment and theater industries, this character-driven novel was a quick and enjoyable read。 It begins when Flora finds her husband’s wedding band (that he claims to have lost years earlier) in the back of a filing cabinet, which leads her to question their relationship。 Overall, I enjoyed this book and would recommend for someone looking for a quick and easy read。 Than Good Company is a book about two couples and their friendships, marriages and careers over several decades。 Set around the entertainment and theater industries, this character-driven novel was a quick and enjoyable read。 It begins when Flora finds her husband’s wedding band (that he claims to have lost years earlier) in the back of a filing cabinet, which leads her to question their relationship。 Overall, I enjoyed this book and would recommend for someone looking for a quick and easy read。 Thanks to NetGalley and Ecco for providing me with an E-ARC in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more

Thank you, NetGalley, for advance access to Good Company。 Sadly, I think fans of The Nest will be disappointed。 A goodreads reviewer compares Good Company to A Marriage Story with Adam Driver。 I never saw that movie but I would say it compares to the novel Monogamy by Sue Miller。 I liked Monogamy better though。 Point for a very pretty cover!

Good Company by Cynthia D’Aprix Sweeney is a story of family, friendship, coming of age, and the pitfalls/glamour of the acting lifestyle, but at its core Good Company is a story of adultery。 This being said, Good Company is one of the only books featuring marital adultery that paints the husband in a flattering light。 I couldn’t stomach the second half of the book and details of the affair because they were absolutely well done。 While Good Company was not the book for me, I cannot recommend it Good Company by Cynthia D’Aprix Sweeney is a story of family, friendship, coming of age, and the pitfalls/glamour of the acting lifestyle, but at its core Good Company is a story of adultery。 This being said, Good Company is one of the only books featuring marital adultery that paints the husband in a flattering light。 I couldn’t stomach the second half of the book and details of the affair because they were absolutely well done。 While Good Company was not the book for me, I cannot recommend it enough for its beautiful writing and portrayal of a dysfunctional family。 I have thus given it a five star rating as not to deter other readers from reading this excellent book。 Big trigger warning for infidelity。 。。。more

Oh, I have mixed feeling about this one。 On the one hand, Sweeney really knows how to craft words。 I really enjoyed her writing style, her descriptions, the way she weaves in and out of different perspectives。 I have not read her first, THE NEST, but I do want to check it out after reading this one。On the other hand, I had a hard time connecting with the characters。。。 and for me, that ranks very high in terms of enjoyment。 I waffled over what I thought about them。 In some moments I really liked Oh, I have mixed feeling about this one。 On the one hand, Sweeney really knows how to craft words。 I really enjoyed her writing style, her descriptions, the way she weaves in and out of different perspectives。 I have not read her first, THE NEST, but I do want to check it out after reading this one。On the other hand, I had a hard time connecting with the characters。。。 and for me, that ranks very high in terms of enjoyment。 I waffled over what I thought about them。 In some moments I really liked them all。。。 and in other moments I was rolling my eyes at their self-indulgence。 In fact, I found it a little ironic near the end when the characters have reunited at their old summer theater venue and Flora and Margot are scoffing at the earnestness of it all。。。 That's how I felt through a lot of the book。 Maybe it's because I don't know very much about being a wealthy 'bicoastal' actor。 ;-) And let me tell you, they tried to play it off like Flora and Julian weren't wealthy, but actions speak louder than words, friends。 Overall, the book was entertaining, I'm glad I read it, but this one probably won't be very memorable to me。Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a free review copy of this book in exchange for am honest review。 。。。more

Good Company is a novel with heart that deftly explores marriage, friendship, parenthood, and the complicated ties that bind。The story unfolds in multiple timelines between the ruthless acting scenes of NYC and LA。 Flora and Margot are single in the big apple, striving to land their big break on Broadway。 When they meet their husbands, the foursome become inseparable with intertwined lives as the years progress。 By middle age, each person finds themselves disillusioned by the course their life has taken; secrets, betrayals and the unceasing search for true happiness were not part of the plan。The novel shines in its nuanced portrayal of the characters。 Cynthia D’Aprix Sweeney masterfully crafts people who make very hurtful mistakes。 Despite this, I was able to muster slivers of grace because I cared for them。 While I did not condone the wounds inflicted, I could understand motivations and offer forgiveness for the decisions that were made。 To me, that is a sign of fantastic writing。 It turns out that well-written family dramas are for me after all。A big thank you to Netgalley and Ecco for providing me with an electronic ARC in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more

Cynthia D'Aprix Sweeney is such a gifted writer。 I loved her first book, The Nest, and recommended it widely, so of course I requested an advance readers copy of Good Company。This book is just as beautifully written and insightful, but it's less absorbing than The Nest。 Perhaps there's less dramatic potential in a friendship between two couples over a 20-year span。 Sweeney's powers of observation and expression are still keen, and I found myself bookmarking passage after passage。One couple, Flor Cynthia D'Aprix Sweeney is such a gifted writer。 I loved her first book, The Nest, and recommended it widely, so of course I requested an advance readers copy of Good Company。This book is just as beautifully written and insightful, but it's less absorbing than The Nest。 Perhaps there's less dramatic potential in a friendship between two couples over a 20-year span。 Sweeney's powers of observation and expression are still keen, and I found myself bookmarking passage after passage。One couple, Flora and Julian, must navigate his infidelity。 The other couple, Margot and David, are both rocked by career setbacks。 And the daughter that they have virtually shared between them is launching into adulthood -- so, a great deal of soul-searching and loss。Perhaps summing up the entire theme, Flora wondered whether "her life -- as she'd always thought -- had been a series of carefully considered choices or, in light of this new information, a series of unfair accommodation?"Three of the four adults are actors, and Sweeney incorporates their professional lives smoothly and affectingly into the narrative。 Although I really enjoyed meeting the two families, there was a lingering thought of "First World problems: as I finished the book。Thanks to NetGalley and Ecco for the ARC。 。。。more

Good Company is the story of Flora Mancini, who thought she was happily married for 20 yrs until she stumbles across an envelope containing her husband's lost wedding ring。 Her life is thrown down a new life path。 Good Company deals with, trust and relationship issues, family, love, and loss。 I just felt like it was hard to follow at times and I had a difficult time staying engaged with this novel。 There are many points of view and a variety of flashbacks that I thought felt a bit choppy。 I thin Good Company is the story of Flora Mancini, who thought she was happily married for 20 yrs until she stumbles across an envelope containing her husband's lost wedding ring。 Her life is thrown down a new life path。 Good Company deals with, trust and relationship issues, family, love, and loss。 I just felt like it was hard to follow at times and I had a difficult time staying engaged with this novel。 There are many points of view and a variety of flashbacks that I thought felt a bit choppy。 I think some readers will really enjoy it just wasn't my favorite。 #netgalley 。。。more

Thank you HarperCollins for the free arc via Netgalley。 I had read The Nest and really liked it, so when I saw the author had another book coming out, I though I should check it out。 I am glad I did。 I found the story interesting and could not wait to see how Flora's husband was going to explain the ring。 The book is about past and present relationships and what they can and cannot overcome。 Having had my own relationships circumvent bumps, it was very relatable。 Having the main characters invol Thank you HarperCollins for the free arc via Netgalley。 I had read The Nest and really liked it, so when I saw the author had another book coming out, I though I should check it out。 I am glad I did。 I found the story interesting and could not wait to see how Flora's husband was going to explain the ring。 The book is about past and present relationships and what they can and cannot overcome。 Having had my own relationships circumvent bumps, it was very relatable。 Having the main characters involved with TV and theatre which I love made it even more interesting to me。 。。。more
